The Red-Whiskered Bulbul (Pycnonotus jocosus), a member of the family Pycnonotidae, also called "Crested Bulbul", is a small passerine native to tropical Asia. It has been introduced to many tropical regions of the world including Australia and parts of the United States (southern California, Florida, Hawaii). Nine subspecies have been described. The Red-Whiskered Bulbul is about 7.0 inches in length and about 1.0 ounces in weight, has brown upperparts, white underparts, broken dark chest band, pointed black crest, red face patch, thin black moustache, long brown tail, and red vent area. The juvenile lacks the red face patch and has an orange vent area. Preferred habitat includes lightly wooded areas, open country with shrubs, and farmland. Preferred foods include small fruit, berries, nectar, and insects. These birds travel as flocks to feed, except when nesting. While not as much of an agricultural pest as the Red-Vented Bulbul, the Red-Whiskered Bulbul is a serious pest.

This Red-Whiskered Bulbul mature perched on a tree branch was photographed at the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden, in Arcadia, California on 7-7-2023. I used a Nikon Z9 camera body and a Nikkor Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S telephoto lens to capture this image. Settings: 1/3200 sec, f/6.3, ISO 1000. The Arboretum covers about 127 acres of land. It is interesting to note that scenes from many movies and television shows were shot at the Arboretum.
